One of Naschy's Better Early Efforts

Although many horror fans embrace all of Paul Naschy's work, it must be admitted that some of his werewolf films do leave a little to be desired. However, this one actually ends up being a really good horror entry. Naschy turns in an excellent performance as the Hunchback. He can at once be both menacing and sympathetic. There's no doubt that he's capable of extreme violence, but he also simply wants to be loved and accepted for who he is. The mad scientist is utterly repugnant and the costume of the slime monster is disgustingly effective. The zombie appears out of nowhere, but even it is well done and appears to be gruesome looking. This is truly an excellent film that does deserve wider attention.
