ZMDB rating: 10/10 (1 votes)

Regina is a beautiful young woman, or I should say she was at one time before she was arrested for several cannibalistic murders. Her face is pale and appears to be rotted. But she never stands trial for her murders, having been found incompetent to stand trial. Regina believes herself to be a zombie. She chronicles her transformation from normal human to what appears to be a zombie. But is she really a zombie? Or is she simply insane? What is the truth here? Could she really be one of the living dead? Or is it all an elaborate delusion? What is the truth?

An Incredible Movie

Pretty Dead turns out to be a pretty damn spectacular cinematic achievement. First, let me say it achieves something pretty rare in zombie films--it presents a genuine original concept here. That alone impressed me. But even better was the fact that the film works on every level. The acting is extremely impressive, especially by Carly Oates who carries the most important role of the film. She displays a wide range of emotions as she changes. She can go from regretful to desperate to angry to hungry just like that, and she manages each change remarkably well. The frustration is obivous as she cannot find a cure and those questioning her don't take her claims seriously (which I liked as well as it was very realistic). The other actors turned in good performances as well. The make-up was very well done as we slowly see Regina disintegrate. The blood and gore was very well done and space out. The music was really well done and a perfect accompaniment to the events of the film. But what I liked most of all was the story and quality of the writing. I loved how doubt continues to run throughout the film of whether she's really a zombie or is she insane and created a vast delusion to explain her insanity? That balance continues throughout the movie. And you also need to make sure you watch all the way through the credits as some questions do seem to be answered there. I give Pretty Dead a rating of 10 out of 10.
