Impeachment is now effectively inevitable. Taylor’s testimony fleshed out the biggest open questions, including whether there was a quid pro quo with Ukraine (there was), what it involved (military aid), and what Trump wanted (investigations of the Biden family and the 2016 election.) Congress has now heard from career civil servants and from political appointees, all telling a similar story, and Taylor removed the last scintilla of doubt. With that, it’s all but impossible to imagine a scenario in which House Democrats don’t vote to impeach the president.

Across Tripolar 2, her latest full-length project, Ann Marie sings like a rapper and raps like a singer. Her choruses soar and her verses forgo sentimentality for blunt, horny examinations of booze-filled and text-riddled romances destined to go nowhere. Tripolar 2, all of them is freestyles,” she says of the album’s recording sessions and the project’s goal of fluidity. The tape’s high point arrives on Worth It,” which sounds indebted to the Drake and Bryson Tiller class of slow, scornful jams. Over the downtempo beat, Marie fills the song with vicious bars aimed at a cheating lover who among other things is a fraud” and ain’t on shit.” The song is suffused with claustrophobia because Marie’s anger never boils over; she saves a uniquely cutting tone for each barb, but offers little in the way of catharsis.

Like her music idols, Anne-Marie is unabashedly herself on her record, which boasts upbeat pop anthems over dance-based production, hints of hip-hop and dancehall, and lovably blunt lyrics. She tells off a lover for sneaking around with someone else, she warns an admirer to stay in the friend zone and she professes self-love. It’s all autobiographical. All of that stuff you hear on my album is true to my life,” she says.
