I feel like I have totally processed it, and in some other ways, haven’t processed anything at all and I don’t even know what I’m doing. I had the pleasure of speaking with Betty Who about her music and much more.
betty who tour dates 2019 – Betty Who Performs ‘Somebody Loves You’ On TODAY
Betty Who released her second album ‘The Valley” in 2017. It feels perfect. And you know, I haven’t felt this way since before I signed my deal. I think I was 20 or 21 when I signed my deal. I was so psyched like, Yeah are you kidding? Now, I’m 26 — in pop years, I’m like 80, so this is exciting Laughs. I feel like it’s a totally new world for me. Everything has this new sparkle to it, which it hasn’t had in a long time.
The Australian singer, born Jessica Anne Newham, first grabbed widespread attention at the age of 21 with her independently-released debut single Somebody Loves You.” Originally just a free download, the song went viral in such a big way that it not only topped the US Dance charts but led to a major label deal for her first LP, Take Me When You Go. Since then, it’s been the soundtrack for an incredible viral video of a marriage proposal in which a man proposed to his boyfriend in the aisles of a Salt Lake City Home Depot. Watch it below, and have tissues handy because there will be tears.
Yeah, no, and I’m never going to sit here and sell Fit Tea to you. That’s not my vibe, because I don’t care what you look like or where you came from or what you do. Encouraging people through Lulu to come to yoga with me is just a great way to connect with my fans, but the number one thing I want to do is bring joy to people through my music and how I live my life and the messages I share. That doesn’t have to be what your life looks like. I want everyone to be themselves. That’s the most important thing to me.
For someone who started hot as a rookie and faced so many roadblocks to success, Betty Who has already won. Many artists who part with their labels, especially one as all-powerful as RCA, fall off slowly after an attempt at flying solo, but not Who. Betty is a triumph for her and her dedicated fans — and ensures that she will continue to light up stages for years to come.
The Australian native, who moved to the United States at the age of 15, has what she calls an indescribable” connection to Washington, D.C. The pop star’s history and rapport with the city goes back almost a decade now, and it also happens to be tied up with one of the city’s leading music presenters, All Things Go.
Leland, himself, reached a career milestone late last year when he was nominated for a Golden Globe in the best original song category for “Revelation,” the Boy Erased anthem he co-wrote with fellow out singer Troye Sivan. Though Leland’s star is on a quick ascent, he still manages to clock in creative time with the close-knit group of LGBTQ artists who became his family when the Mississippi native relocated to Los Angeles seven years ago.
The series of shows that this is part of is called the Off the Record series and sees a number of artists from all over the world coming to different Kimpton Hotels across North America to raise money for The Trevor Project. The Trevor Project is a non-profit that raises money for crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to LGBTQ young people under 25. The partnership is making sure to emphasize that people should be able to feel free to be themselves. The silent auction that took place had a Vinyl Me Please subscription up for grabs as well as a signed Betty Who Gibson guitar, among a few other items. She is ramping up for a long tour of North America and joked how they had just finished getting the choreography together, so all the moves we were seeing were being done perfectly. She played a couple of her latest songs off of Betty as well as fan favorites I Love You Always Forever” and Somebody Loves You.” With a quick thank you and goodnight Betty left the stage. The crowd wanted more and cheered for an encore but it wasn’t meant to be. It was actually our three-year anniversary yesterday. Three years doesn’t sound that long, but it feels like it’s been forever. Much of the big stuff that’s happened in my life, he’s been there for. And it’s so gross, because I’m completely obsessed with him, and when I talk about him I still get that feeling where I want to throw up and smile so big that my face hurts all at the same time.
The singer returns today with “Ignore Me,” her first single as an independent musician in five years. “Every decision made was mine, every detail was agonised sic over, and every last bit of my heart is in this song,” Who wrote on Instagram “I can finally put out music the way I’ve always wanted to: straight from me to you.” Co-written with Leland (Troye Sivan, Selena Gomez, Allie X) and produced by Who’s longtime collaborator Peter Thomas ( “Somebody Loves You” ), the track is ’80s synth-pop at its finest.
The first time we heard of Betty Who was back when we were running our music blog and we posted a few of her original songs,” says Stephen Vallimarescu, co-founder of the music promotion and production company, which helped present one of Who’s first shows in D.C. That was in the old Living Social space downtown, where we hosted a few events. It was like a 100, 200-capacity venue.
It was one of the last songs to be added to the album so by the time we finally got into the studio to work on it, I was chomping at the bit to make it mine. It’s sassy and sexy and so fun to sing. This is another song I can’t wait to perform for everyone.
In the final days of Betty Who’s headlining tour across North America — which included shows in Los Angeles, Vancouver, Atlanta, and Orlando — the Australian-born singer-songwriter took time to open up her suitcase for Travel + Leisure.
Australian artist Betty Who has written us a track-by-track of her upcoming album The Valley, due out on 24 March. I’m honestly just excited to get back in the studio. I want to make more music now. It’s really the first time in my career where I just want to keep going. I’ll sleep when I’m dead.
Today, we’ll be tackling that most incessant of earworms, I Love You Always Forever”, released in 1996 to become a mega-smelling smash for Welsh singer-songwriter Donna Lewis. Twenty years after its release, it was covered up by indie synthpop artist Betty Who to massive acclaim, becoming her biggest hit and turning into a recognizable indie staple.
The trajectory of Austin-based psychedelic soul band Black Pumas has been on the rise this past year. Touring behind their self-titled debut album, Eric Burton and Adrian Quesada have sold out venues across the world as well as taped an Austin City Limits episode – their first – this past August. Their first two singles, “Black Moon Rising” and “Fire,” catapulted the band to three sold out shows at the Mohawk last month. The band’s current single, “Colors,” is rapidly climbing the charts at radio.
In a freewheeling and honest conversation, Who explained what caused her to leave RCA and why. Below, read her own words on why it was time to go, along with insightful thoughts on the music industry, authenticity, and how grateful she is to her fans (seriously, she said the word grateful” about 25 times in a 15-minute-long phone call—Who is nothing if not polite, gracious, and good-humored). And be sure to check out the song, because it’s really fucking good.
This song is an ode to somebody who had their heart broken. I wanted to write an anthem for them, something that was only for them, that affirmed their inner dialogue. I think when we get broken up with, sometimes it’s really hard to get back on the I’m a strong independent lady and I don’t need no man” train.
Thank you very much. I’m super excited about it and I’ve just been waiting to put it out since September, so I’m kind of looking forward to doing that and putting out a whole new EP, because I’m really, really confident about music from the second EP and I really hope and think that people will like it.
On 15 June 2018, Betty, Pt. 1 , Who’s third EP, was released containing the singles “Ignore Me”, “Look Back” and “Taste” as well as two other previously unreleased songs: “Just Thought You Should Know” and “Friend Like Me”.
I don’t really remember what he said, or what I said. I actually completely blacked out from that memory, until I remember after I had said yes, I went to go hug him and I put my hand on his neck and remember feeling his heart beating so fast like a little hummingbird. I was like, “Are you okay?” and he said, “Oh my God, I need a cigarette.” It was so lovely, and my parents were totally in on it. When we got home, they had champagne and strawberries waiting for us. It was the best moment ever; I can’t wait to marry him, and see him every day for the rest of my life.
