While there are brilliant moments throughout – the effervescent Dua Lipa collaboration Kiss and Make Up and a riotous Boombayah , in which the band’s precision-engineered choreography is loosened up – the overall feeling is of a missed opportunity.

blackpink rose – Pop Queens Blackpink’s Kill This Love” Just Made ITunes, YouTube History

BLACKPINKMove over, BTS: After the Stateside success of the South Korean boy band , it’s now time for K-pop girl group Blackpink to stage their US takeover. Just when fans around the world thought BLACKPINK couldn’t get any bigger, the record-smashing all-female K-Pop group has proved them wrong. With a bang. Blackpink brought K-pop to Coachella. According to Koreaboo, Jisoo, Jennie, Rose and Lisa had put on a great show for their fans, dubbed Blinks.

What do Destiny’s Child and Psy have in common? They both just had one of their record-setting songs overtaken by pop music’s latest big thing: Blackpink, an all-female K-pop group whose new single, Kill This Love,” is setting impressive milestones within the music industry.

BLACKPINK started 2019 with a major YouTube accomplishment. The group’s “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” music video reached 600 million views by Jan. 13, about half a year after its premiere, making them first K-pop group to hit such a milestone so quickly. The only other Korean acts to have a music video surpass 600 million views are BTS and viral phenomenon Psy.

Jennie became the first member of BLACKPINK to release a solo song in November 2018. Jennie spoke out about her decision to release the tune, conveniently titled “SOLO,” in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter at the time.

The group’s North American tour kicks off in Los Angeles at The Forum on April 17, in between their Coachella performance dates on April 12 and 19, which marks the first-ever performance from an all-female K-pop group in its 20 years.

According to Billboard , it’s the highest-charting Billboard Hot 100 song by a female K-pop group everrrr. It opened at number 55 in June 2018. They also debuted at number one on Billboard’s Emerging Artists chart.

She sparked minor anxiety among fans when they noticed she wasn’t in a photo that 21-year-old singer Shawn Mendes posted with her group mates Jennie, Lisa and Jisoo when he performed in Seoul, but they were thrilled to see the BLACKPINK member living it up in Paris with Halsey.

With over 20 million YouTube subscribers to date, it’s safe to say that BLACKPINK have got the viewing platform nailed. Astonishingly, despite their huge popularity in their homeland, South Korea (with 162 million views over the last year) represents only their sixth most popular market, behind Indonesia (644 million views), Thailand (401 million), the Philippines (296 million), Vietnam (246 million) and the US (164 million), according to YouTube’s music charts and insights tool.

Lisa (Lalisa Manoban): The only non-Korean member of Blackpink, Lisa was born and raised in Thailand and moved to Seoul as a middle-school student. At 22, Lisa is the youngest member of the group and judging by social media, the most popular: With more than 17 million followers on Instagram, Lisa has the largest following among all female K-pop artists.

The K-Pop charge has been led by BTS, the seven-piece boyband who have transformed the genre from a national obsession to a worldwide force. They’ve stormed the charts in Europe and North America and sold out venues that, only a few years previously, would have never entertained the thought of hosting a K-Pop group. They played two packed-out shows at the O2 in London back in October and, months before that, tickets for their first ever US stadium concert at the 40,000-capacity Citi Field disappeared within minutes.

The girl-group channeled the energy of the rapturous crowd as they tore through the track, a break-up anthem that moves from an airy synth calm to a thundering, horn-packed stomp. Blackpink’s choreography was as meticulous as their vocals, and as Rosé led the group through the song’s marching drum bridge, they were joined onstage by a small army of back-up dancers dressed as soldiers.

Recall that Ariana Grande‘s ex-boyfriend, the rapper Mac Miller, died of a drug overdose in September last year, aged 26. Two months later Grande released thank u, next”, a song about moving on from break-ups, which named Miller, among others, in the lyrics. Marvel again at how the song is light as a broth; check the reviews. Pitchfork called it an eloquent display of inner strength”. Rolling Stone said it was surprisingly gracious”. Jezebel commented approvingly that the song was not the anthem of a spurned lover, looking to destroy everything in her path”. Everyone agrees how empowering it was that Ariana Grande, aged 25, did not show any grief or rage.

A lot of songs overlap between these various releases, but your safest bet to get the whole is to listen to Blackpink in your area.

The group’s ” girl crush ” concept seen in their music videos was another interesting aspect. Where other girl groups might opt for a cute concept for their first release, Blackpink projected what would later be defined as pretty and savage” energy into the world as they spat fiery raps, did donuts in an empty parking lot, and daintily sat on the Earth like they owned it. That confidence and effortless style was well received by fans, who quickly became obsessed with K-pop’s new girl gang.

The group released the music video for Kill This Love” — a dizzyingly cinematic showcase for all four members, as they dance in Greco-Roman ruins, a mansion, a supermarket, etc. — on the same day the single dropped. Within two days and 14 hours, it surpassed 100 million views, faster than any other music video on the platform to date.
