Just tell me it’s timeless. Tell me I took enough time out on my album and it really paid off. I want it to sound like I’ve worked on it for as long as I’ve worked on it. Not rushed, because I could have done that so many times. I have tons of music from 2015 that I haven’t released. Tell me that the album is timeless and be honest about it.

There are moments of introspection scattered within these six records, like on Bullshit” where she briefly addresses possible reasons for her hiatus. She rapped I can’t be in bitches’ face, I can’t be fakin’ no smiles, I can’t be wrapped up in no label, I done figured it out, ‘Cause they wouldn’t give a fuck if I died tomorrow, I put my music on my back and on my unborn child.” It’d be nice to hear more of her personal story being implemented in her music, as it would add more substance moving forward. Liberated represents the next stage in her growth: the arrival of an artist who knows a little more about what she wants in life—or at least how she’s going to achieve it. Trimble, who works better alone, retreated to her current home base of Atlanta, where her mother and siblings also live, to write the LP. It took her a year and a half. I’m really from that kind of environment, so I can do Try Me.” I can do the songs that you heard. I have that balance ’cause I’ve always been on my toes as far as the people around me. Everybody else grew up crazy, I’m not perfect, but they really are about that life.

It’s coming up on a year since Lil Nas X took over the music industry with his debut single “Old Town Road.” Before it reaches that milestone, the Georgia native’s popular hit, featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, has reached a feat that solidifies its place in history. The YoungKio-produced track was certified diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the first to do so this year.

It’s been a relatively quiet career Detroit’s rap songstress DeJ Loaf ever since her past relationship with Lil Durk. The last time longtime fans received a DeJ project was back in 2017 when she joined forces with Jacquees for their collaborative Fuck a Friend Zone LP, and it’s been over two years since her last solo release All Jokes Aside hit the streets.

Nessa talks to Dej Loaf about her recent success and what she likes in a perfect relationship. Durk and DeJ’s 2015 hit My Beyoncé” took us back to 2005 when Bow Wow and Ciara released their single Like You.” At the moment, Durk is focused on his craft and having everything planned correctly.

Last December, Loaf told journalists that her first full-length album would be titled Liberated, with her manager adding that the album was 90% done” and expected to appear in 2017. Although we’re still awaiting its release, Loaf hasn’t been quiet in the interim. Her most recent single, Changes,” should allay any fears that Loaf has gone soft in her bid for a larger audience. In lieu of the melisma and melodies she’s leaned toward with her work over the last year, Changes” foregrounds Loaf’s technical prowess and po-faced lyricism. Producer Rick Reed gives the track the right mix of punch and polish, ensuring the sting of Loaf’s barbs sticks with you for a while.

Entering the old gothic school through a metal detector at the front door, inspirational quotes and images of African American heroes like Obama, Ali and Jordan beam back at you. Slogans like You can prevent gun violence: a hug is a handshake from the heart” grip the walls of its quiet corridors. In the staff room, rapper DeJ Loaf’s IBGM (I Been Gettin’ Money) crew are hanging out, waiting for their most famous member to turn up. As a reward for the school rising out of the PLA (Persistently Lowest Achieving) rankings for the first time in 20 years, Principal McGhee has arranged a surprise live performance of DeJ’s crossover hit, Try Me ”.

Tragedy struck the Detroit, Michigan native early: her father was killed when she was just 4 years old. As she grew up, Dej escaped from her troubles and her shyness by writing in her diary. Dej studied nursing in college for three semesters but quit to pursue a music career, supporting herself by working as a janitor.

In less than a year, DeJ Loaf’s hardcore tale of Michigan street life has taken her from being a local mixtape maven to the undisputed Queen of Detroit, with Drake quoting her verses on Instagram , and Wiz Khalifa, E-40, Remy Ma and more creating their own remixes. Following the viral success of Try Me” and its accompanying Sell Sole mixtape, hometown demigod Eminem recruited DeJ (it rhymes with ‘beige’, BTW) to sing the hook on his thunderous posse cut, Detroit vs Everybody ”. Kid Ink then asked her to do the same for his DJ Mustard -produced banger, Be Real ”, and Nicki Minaj was just happy to jump on stage and be DeJ Loaf’s hype man”. They’re now about to go on a stadium tour together. In a city synonymous with grim news, the story of Deja Trimble’s rise to the top is a long overdue fairytale, particularly for the kids of Metro Detroit.

Even though she’s grown up with decay on her doorstep, DeJ stills seems pained by the state of her town. These houses are pretty fucked up,” she says as countless charred and crumbling wrecks whizz by in the reflection of her sunglasses. It’s crazy… crazy. I hate it, but it’s Detroit. We’re really in the jungle… People don’t live like this. Growing up there wasn’t much of a view, you just come outside and you see… that. Who knows, I could say some stuff and we might get this shithole of a world we represent back to where it needs to be. I think it can get better, I know it can. I feel like, if it wasn’t for the music, who knows what Detroit would be? Right now, the music holds it together. If I didn’t have this, I don’t know where I would be. I’d probably be walking up the streets looking crazy,” she says with a laugh, winding up the window.

Deja reached the very top of her popularity by being involved into Eminem’s compilation Shady XV in 2014. Eminem helped her a lot just by being one of the most popular rappers, if not the most popular one.

Since then, she’s flown relatively under the radar, dropping the All Jokes Aside and Fck A Friend Zone mixtapes, the latter with singer Jacquees, and most recently delivering ‘Go DeJ Go’ Vol.1 , a six-song EP that acted as a hard reset after promotion of her debut solo album stalled out with the singles No Fear ” and Liberated” featuring Leon Bridges.

DeJ Loaf is a relatively new female rap artists hailing from Detroit, Michigan. DeJ put out her first mixtape, Just Do It, in 2012 (available for download on HNHH), although that project didn’t quite take her as far as her single “Try Me”, which turned her into an overnight success. Wiz Khalifa proceeded to hop on the remix, as co-sign after co-sign flooded in for the rapper, including Drake, Ty Dolla $ign and more.

She began her music career in 2011. Her stage name, Dej Loaf, is a portmanteau of a shortened version of her first name, “Deja”, and “loafer”, as she took a keen interest in Air Jordans growing up. Dej released her debut mixtape, Just Do It, in 2012, which attracted the attention of fellow Detroit rapper Sayitainttone She was later signed to his label IBGM (an acronym for I Been Gettin’ Money).

On February 7, 2016, Loaf announced her third mixtape. Originally titled The Death of Princess Latifah, it depicted on her feud with Queen Latifah She also revealed a cover of herself burning Latifah (who is wearing a princess costume, hence the reference to the original title, Princess Latifah) to smithereens with a lit candlestick, while inside a castle, as a dinner meeting had just started. For which, the cover is referenced with the title as a concept. Unfortunately, both the title and cover received controversy via social media, calling Dej a “fraud” for going against “a hip-hop soul legend”, with the original cover being criticized for “graphic violence”. Therefore, Loaf changed the title to All Jokes Aside, along with a new, spare cover where we see Loaf posing shirtless in front of the camera, with her arms and elbows covering up her breasts and her fingers stuck to her ears. This was attempted to avoid more controversy, halfway to its release.

Detroit-born Dej Loaf, aka Deja Trimble, was raised by her parents and grandmother on a steady diet of hip hop and jazz. Her father was killed when she was four years old, and at age nine she began writing music to channel her emotions. After dropping out of nursing school in 2011 to pursue music full-time, she made her debut in 2013 with the mixtape Just Do It. She followed up in 2014 with the track “Try Me”, which got a major boost when Drake quoted its lyrics in an Instagram post. The exposure helped establish her as an emerging hip hop force, leading to a deal with Columbia records and a collaboration with Eminem. Critics took note – in 2015 she was chosen as part of XXL Magazine’s Freshman Class. Since then she’s continued her rise, dropping her highly anticipated debut album #AndSeeThatsTheThing in summer 2015 and opening for Nicki Minaj on The Pinkprint Tour.

Rapper DeJ Loaf (born Deja Trimble) grew up on the east side of Detroit and started writing lyrics from a young age. She continued pursuing music while attending Saginaw Valley State and working as a janitor at a Chrysler factory, but didn’t get much traction.

Throughout the EP there are stretches where the simplicity of the raps and repetitiveness of certain themes start making the music sound much less compelling than it should. You hear that on a song like Big Keys” that is much less melody-driven than what we typically hear from DeJ, and the verses come off as a bit basic. DeJ’s skill-set lies greatly in her ability to deliver relatable content and be catchy, and when this isn’t taking place it becomes easy to check out.

All I can tell the people in my music is how I feel. I’m not trying to steer them in my direction and tell them to think how I think. I’m not really into politics. That doesn’t exist to me, so I don’t even share that with them. I don’t care about Trump, I just live in my own world. Like I said, I do watch what I say. I don’t tell them to do ignorant shit. I motivate them. It’s motivational music.

For Loaf, it comes down to making good music. She’s been supported by an upwelling of female fans as well as prominent male rappers like Drake and Big Sean, boasting that those who doubt her are soon to be proven wrong. What makes Loaf such a force to be reckoned with is her ability to dance around gender, especially in a genre that is so traditionally characterized by a very specific type of masculinity. She doesn’t try to tell her story from the perspective of a sister or lover or woman but as a person. This kind of distinction is often overlooked. But, in the case of DeJ Loaf and the rappers to follow, it makes all the difference.

Rising Detroit rapper Dej Loaf scored several major coups in 2015, including an appearance on XXL Magazine’s coveted Freshman Class list and an opening gig for Nicki Minaj on The Pinkprint Tour. Critics have hailed her as hip hop’s next big thing, and it’s easy to see why whenever she performs her slick, minimal brand of trap in concert. From her relaxed flow and clever wordplay to her signature all-black gear, Loaf is the picture of self-assured swagger, and she always gets fans bouncing with her bass-heavy performances. From the hypnotic synths of “Try Me” to the sensual lyrics of “Me U & Hennessy”, Dej Loaf gives ticket buyers plenty of futuristic hip hop goodness to help them get down every time she takes the stage.

Dej has been accused of being gay a few times. She said that because she is a rapper and dresses comfortable, it doesn’t mean she is a tomboy and it doesn’t mean that she is gay. She was asked about her sexuality at the 2015 BET Awards.

She didn’t waste any time and she started to write as soon as she could. In 2013, she released her first work of art, Just Do It. Dej was lucky that the mixtape attracted a fellow rapper called SAYITAINTTONE with whom she later worked.

Loaf, who began releasing music in 2012, has only recently reached the acclaim it seemed she was always destined to achieve. Like many music greats before her, Loaf briefly experimented with college before deciding to focus on her music full time. With remixes featuring Wiz Khalifa, a quote in one of Drake’s Instagram captions and collaborations with fellow Detroiter Big Sean, Loaf’s decision to make music a priority is paying off big time.

Go DeJ Go Vol. 1 is a solid effort but isn’t satisfying enough as a listener, especially for anyone who’ve been anticipating a big return to music from DeJ Loaf. It’s amazing because in the early days, Nicki fought so hard for the radio play. Now, looking at how Cardi has broken through, it feels like times are changing.

Anna Burch is a familiar name in the city’s local music scene: She’s been a member of folk-rock group Frontier Ruckus, co-fronted the indie pop act Failed Flowers, backed Ypsilanti-based singer-songwriter Fred Thomas on his latest album Changer, and put out a split cassette with fellow Detroiter Stef Chura last year.

It wasn’t really me. I feel like it was just personal things going on in my life that kind of made me draw back. I had to fire a few people, stuff like that. I was in the process of switching my team. You work so hard and put your trust in people, then they do you so dirty.DEJ LOAF

When I got there, it was nice. I had met new friends and things like that. Slowly but surely, I just kind of brought it back to what I really wanted to do, which is music. I know I have to wake up for class, but I don’t want to wake up. I was missing my family, and I just started going home every weekend. It is so close to home. It was only about an hour away, so I had started going home every weekend and was like, Man.” Maybe I should have went out of state or something. Maybe I would have felt it more. But at that time, I was still feeling my music more—like ‘man, I gotta get to this music.’ And so that’s when I went home and made the Just Do It mixtape and went from there.

Not really. People rock with me, man. I think when you talk about the corporate part of things, I don’t feel like I’ve been turned away for anything. I don’t know if it was behind my back, but I haven’t experienced it yet. That’s why I feel like it’s changing. You have to work hard as women and stop crying about being women.

Yeah, definitely. He used to let us play lots of music, like tons of music growing up. E-40. Rakim. All types of music, you know what I mean? Tupac. So I used to sit on his lap rapping along to the lyrics, Those are the memories I have. And I remember the night he was actually killed too.
