gunnar – Lil Baby Reveals He Used To Pay Gunna $100 To Write His Raps

The south-side of Atlanta. Over the past two years, Gunna has rapidly gained popular media attention from both fans and fellow artists alike. Some of my fans wanna come to my show just to see what I’m gonna wear.

GunnaAs a kid growing up just south of Atlanta, rapper Gunna, a.k.a. Sergio Kitchens (born 1993), used to practice what he and his friends called six-month runs”: cut all extraneous spending for six months and save, save, save. G: It’s a lot that’s in the character of being a rapper. It’s about presentation. People will like you for your music but they want to see what you’re gonna wear. Some of my fans wanna come to my show just to see what I’m gonna wear. It plays a big part in my music because that’s what I speak about. It’s what I go by. It helps a fan connect with an artist, especially if you wear the same brands they do. Nowadays you can get what everyone is wearing.

These tracks are delivered in the Atlanta style of obsessively repeated single melodies, whose seductive monotony enhances the sense of a downbeat quest for meaning. Gunna deploys another Atlantan innovation, the ad-libs of Migos where the final word of each line is emphatically repeated, but gives it a powerful spin. He stretches the ad-libs out and overlaps them, letting them spill into the next bar: the effect, as on the nominatively deterministic track Outstanding, is an impressionistic swim of words, further blurred by his smudged enunciation. Gunna is known for championing the slang term drip” to describe his ever-stylish garms; his delivery chimes perfectly with the aquatic metaphor.

At the beginning of 3 Headed Snake,” from his new album, Drip or Drown 2,” Gunna is beautifully mumbling. Words are in there somewhere, but they’re genuinely of no concern. Rather than use a mumble to signal confusion or disorientation, he treats blurry words as a thing of exuberance. For him, the dance of pure syllables is almost peppy.

Gunna is relying too heavily on his clout privilege.” In essence, clout privilege” is when artists who’ve risen to fame are able to release mediocre projects with the security that the public will like it just because it’s attached to their name.

As you may expect from a Gunna project, Drip or Drown 2 does have its fair share of creative and interesting beats, with Who You Foolin” sampling a unique guzheng instrumental from Chinese singer Tong Li. For returning Gunna fans, the album is also chock-full of dynamic, hard-hitting bass rhythms that the MC is well known for rapping over.

Gunna has gone from Young Thug’ s protege to bonafide rap star in less than three years’ time. Tag-teaming with fellow ATL staple Lil Baby, the artist born Sergio Kitchens has been at the forefront of a new pack of Atlanta rappers leading the cultural conversation – and he’s even redefined how we “drip” in the process, thanks to his lavish raps and array of tight designer fits.

During a sit down with 16 Bars, the Atlanta rapper revealed that he used to pay his pal $100 to write his songs for him which helped develop his spitting skills.

If ‘Drip Too Hard’ didn’t get stuck in your head at least once this year you’re doing something wrong. Georgia-based rapper Gunna became interested in music and rapping as hobby in his early teens. Things blew up when he was introduced to Young Thug. I didn’t take long before he lent a verse alongside rap superstars Gucci Mane and Travis Scott. That feature was enough to get him signed to Young Thug’s YSL imprint where he released Drip Season 1, 2, 3 and his latest album Drip Harder as a collaboration with Lil Baby.

Between a couple more seasons of Drip and features with Travis Scott (Yosemite”) and Metro Boomin (Space Cadet”), Gunna also forged a productive collaboration with Atlanta rapper Lil Baby, releasing Drip Harder in late 2018. The pairing was anointed GOAT status from a sometime GOAT himself, Future, with whom Gunna also featured on Unicorn Purp.” Like Thug, Gunna has a thing for fashion; drip” is his slang for personal style. The salesmen that know me in Barneys say I smell like Biscotti mixed with Creed,” he raps on Idk Why,” from his official 2019 debut album, Drip or Drown 2.

We caught up with Gunna before the release of his debut album ‘Drip or Drown 2,’ and the Atlanta rapper is ready to conquer all of rap. Later, Young Thug and Gunna take the stage for a collaborative musical performance.

Now that he’s the most prominent of Young Thug ‘s YSL-affiliated protégés, Gunna, born Sergio Kitchens, wonders whether his actions should speak louder than his clothing. He doesn’t think he can get away with only posting outfit-of-the-day shots on Instagram; Instagram Live must be in his near future. He’s even muted in conversation, with a talking voice that’s about one-third of the way between total silence and normal dialogue. It’s all reflective of a laid-back nature that leaks onto wax.

It’s safe to say that superstar Gunna ‘s career has taken off. The Atlanta rapper began his flirtation with music and rapping as a hobby in his early teens, which then kicked into high gear after meeting Young Thug in 2016. All it took was hopping on Thug’s track ” Floyd Merryweather ,” with Gucci Mane and Travis Scott for the flirtation to burst into a full-blown love affair, resulting in over 14 million monthly listeners and a fan base that includes A$AP Rocky, Drake, and Virgil Abloh.

In his latest album, Atlanta rapper Gunna provides a familiar throwback to his 2017 Drip or Drown EP. Released last Friday, Drip or Drown 2 is a sixteen-song project with features from Lil Baby, Young Thug and Playboi Carti. Gunna continues to deliver more of his patented, subtle orations over laid-back instrumentals with an emphasis on traditional Atlanta trap themes.

In essence, Gunna is doing for Lil Baby what Young Thug did for Gunna back in the day, parlaying a friendship and mentorship into an ongoing creative partnership, instilling the young rapper with the confidence to rhyme alongside the world’s top MCs while building the foundation for the next generation of Atlanta hip-hop.

Drip Season is more like, I’m letting you know what I’m putting down for today’s style, right then. Drip or Drown is more like, I really do this for real—all year around. That’s why I’m taking it to a whole ‘nother level with this one. I’m going to make it more where people can see it instead of just hearing the music. I’m going to visualize everything. I want you to see what I see when I’m making the music.

Gunna wouldn’t see his first check from streaming royalties until 2017’s Drip Season 2, which makes sense. Marquee features from Offset , Playboi Carti and, of course, Thug would compel anyone to press play. But compared to his guests’ pop art approach to hip-hop, what stands out most in Gunna’s post-Floyd” releases is his preternatural calm, a take on trap even more impressionistic than Thug’s Barter 6. Troupe taught Gunna not to overstate himself. Don’t go back and forth with nobody,” the rapper remembers him advising. Don’t argue. We ain’t doing that. What you going back and forth with somebody over anything for?” Meanwhile, the Atlanta hip-hop scene rewards such stylistic individuality above all else, as Gunna demonstrated again on last November’s Drip or Drown and Drip Season 3, his true breakout project, this past February.

Drip or Drown 2 is a staple Gunna album, focusing on soft vocal melodies paired with low-key trap beats. The album has numerous interesting qualities that make it a solid addition to the current wave of hip-hop and feels very authentic to both Gunna and Atlanta rap, with all three features coming from prominent Atlanta stars. The album’s style falls squarely in the new-wave, mumble rap category, with simple messages and little emphasis on lyricism while still maintaining the Atlanta trap motif.

It started in 2018 when his Drip Season 3 mixtape helped him ascend to the top of the scene in Atlanta, rap’s current epicenter, and solidified the hip-hop obsession with the term drip.” Gunna’s silky, slightly robotic flow was fresh, similar to Young Thug ‘s excited trilling but more toned down and rich with commercial possibilities. The rest of his year was huge, as he joined with fellow local rapper Lil Baby for Drip Harder and the massive hit Drip Too Hard” (which peaked at No. 4 on the Hot 100), and revealed how smooth his voice could be without its metallic edge in a freestyle video with 11 million views.

What makes these tracks stand out is both their variation in beats and the fact they feel reminiscent of Gunna’s previous projects, especially Drip Season 3” — arguably Gunna’s best and most popular project.

Burna Boy will headline the Sept. 14 Afro-Carribean show, with support from openers Kranium and Koffee. Young the Giant will return to UB on Oct. 12 for an indie-rock showcase, with supporting acts to be announced. The final Nov. 8 concert will feature co-headliners and trap newcomers Gunna and DaBaby — both members of XXL’s 2019 freshman class.

For the last couple of years, the 25-year-old rapper from Georgia has been releasing strong mixtapes steadily — Drip or Drown 2” doesn’t quite have the full force of last year’s Drip Season 3” or Drip Harder,” his collaborative album with Lil Baby, but it is still thick with his signatures: calmness and word manipulation.

Let’s face it, menswear luxury brands will have to embrace rappers if they want any credibility with that generation, but it needs to be authentic. Gunna is authentic. He has appeared sporadically on numerous Young Thug songs, as well as collaborations with Gucci Mane, Playboi Carti, Lil’ Uzi and a handful of others. Thanks to his latest tape and installment in the series, Drip Season 3, the 25-year-old rapper is in for something special, as are his fans. On top of his solo project, you can find him on critically acclaimed projects like YSL’s Slime Languagehosted by Young Thug and Travis Scott‘s ASTROWORLD. Gunna currently averages approx. 3 Million monthly listeners onSpotify.

Ahead of So Much Fun, Young Thug released a music video for The London” which featured J. Cole and Travis Scott He also made an appearance on Post Malone ‘s recent single Goodbyes” So Much Fun is Thug’s first full-length solo project since Beautiful Thugger Girls, but he released an EP called On The Rvn last year, along with the YSL compilation Slime Language To promote that album, Thug sent our office a friendly snake named Digits,” and sent other snakes to Noisey, Mass Appeal, and The FADER.

A new fan favorite on Thugger’s No. 1 So Much Fun album: the duo knew the song would be a smash, as they even argued over whose track it would actually be With Thug being the boss of YSL Records, he obviously ended up winning out there. Gunna gets slimy over Wheezy’s triumphant production, while Thugger takes the baton and incorporates animal screeches into his syrupy verse, making listeners feel like they’re traveling through the Amazon. “Hot” debuted at No. 26 on the Hot 100 , and marks a new high-water mark in the partnership of the two MCs.

Hoping to extend the party one more night? Gunna’s got you covered. The Atlanta rapper performs again on Monday, September 23, at the official LIB closing party inside Marquee Nightclub at the Cosmopolitan.

In 2013, Gunna released the mixtape Hard Body under the name Young Gunna. Gunna was introduced to Young Thug through King Troup, a mutual friend and community figure who died in December 2015. Gunna later recorded “Floyd Mayweather” with Young Thug in 2016. Also in 2016, Gunna released his debut mixtape Drip Season through YSL Records. He released the mixtapes Drip Season 2 in May 2017 and Drip Season 3 in February 2018. In October 2018, he and Lil Baby released the joint mixtape Drip Harder, which peaked at number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. In February 2019, he released the album Drip or Drown 2.

Half of the tracks are different than the rest, increasing their replay value. What makes these songs stand apart is Gunna’s vocal inflection paired with a variety of flows that seems to blend well with the tempo of his beats.

I’m gon’ drip forever, but I’m not going to just focus on that. That’s not going to be the title of all my albums. Drip is me. That’s my signature. I could never act like I’m going to steer away from that, but it’s more in store as far as what I can give to music that’s not just about drip.

The album’s best moments, however, come to life in the chemistry between him and the album’s executive producers, Wheezy and Turbo, with the guitar licks on the Turbo-produced Sold Out Dates” providing a template for much of Drip or Drown 2. On Out the Hood” and Who You Foolin,” they give his hood melodies” a heartbeat. On Speed it Up,” the follow-up single, Gunna’s voice fits into Turbo’s drum production like a puzzle piece.

Gunna is a rapper from College Park, GA. Known for his melodic flows, he was introduced to Young Thug through friend and mentor Keith Troup, and subsequently signed to Thug’s Label YSL.

Young Thug just dropped his new album So Much Fun last Friday, with contributions from the likes of Lil Baby , Nav , and Future Now, he’s released a video for Surf” (ft. Gunna ), shot by longtime collaborator Be EL Be, who’s handled the visuals for such classic Thug tracks as Check ,” Best Friend ,” and Givenchy” In the new video, Thug and Gunna ride around on ATVs and shoot squirt guns at women on a beach—timeless stuff.

Watch the interview below in its entirety where Lil Baby talks about the beginning stages in his music career. Lil Baby and Gunna have an admirable bromance, and the Quality Control rapper just revealed one reason why.

Additionally, I was disappointed with both the Lil Baby and Playboi Carti features. The now iconic duo of Lil Baby and Gunna did not produce one of the classics we have come to expect from such a collaboration, with Lil Baby unimpressively appearing in Derek Fisher.” Similarly, Playboi Carti’s appearance is lackluster and falls short of what a unique and genre-pushing artist like Playboi Carti can add to a project. Due to the minimal number of features on the album, these appearances could have been utilized better in bringing much-needed variety to the album.

gunna dosnt really perform any of his real songs and plays a lot of other peoples stuff and sings over it. he isn’t that interesting of a performer and his music dosnt help either.

G: What I have that’s special in my music is substance. It’s music that people can really relate to. I know I’m gonna rap something that somebody has already been through in their life; something that they will understand. I put a lot of work into my last project and I talked about things that really happened in my life that people can relate to in life.
