After the unexpected cancellation of Fox’s musical drama Star, Luke James has snatched a recurring role on the third season of Showtime’s The Chi. We only met Luke once, but he was full of Life and Love for Jesus. He and his brother were having so much fun popping the water balloons. Michelle and I enjoyed that time a great deal.

LOS ANGELES – September 16, 2019 – Two-time Grammy(R) nominee Luke James (Star, Little), La La Anthony (Power) and Lil Rel Howery (Get Out, Bird Box) have signed on to guest star in multiple episodes of the third season of the SHOWTIME drama series THE CHI. In addition, writer Justin Hillian (Snowfall) has been named showrunner and executive producer this season. Birgundi Baker (Empire, Chicago Med), who plays Kiesha, has been upped to a series regular. THE CHI is currently in production in Chicago and will return to the network in 2020.

My moms also gave me jazz, blues, funk, gospel, rock, soul, took me to church to really see what music did to people, with chords and chord changes, how it moved. As an only child you know, you spend a lot of time by yourself, you spend a lot of time analyzing a lot of things, and in church that’s what I did: I analyzed. I use to just watch people be moved by music, by the spirit that’s in music, or what music does to their spirits, and all that influenced me tremendously! You know, to see someone be so moved to break down and cry, thru chords, just some chords, or even some words, or even just the conviction in someone’s voice regardless of the skill, the pain, the honesty. That fueled my pursuit to want to create my own art, my own music to move people.

LJ: Like 95%. I have an idea of what I want to hear and how I want to hear myself and what I want to sing on. Just by being able to write songs with different people and work with different producers, it enabled me to just play around with different sounds, and even giving me time to really hone in on what it is I’m trying to do, what do I want to say.

And his role on Star has proved to be the perfect blend of his musical and acting talents. Cast as Noah Brooks, an embattled singer with an ambitious streak, James says his character will prove to be triumphant this season.

I always thought about what the rest of the world looked like. I wanted to explore; I wanted to see London, Africa, and places like that. I always wanted to be a musician. I used to always make up songs on the fly. I think I’ve always wanted to move people. I had it in the back of my head that this was my calling. I used to imagine what it would be like to have fame like Boyz II Men. Everybody loved Boyz II Men.

This October’s run begins with two of Glasper’s most consistent and steady conglomerates back-to-back. The first week will open up with long time collaborators Chris Dave and Derrick Hodge, joined by special guest Yasiin Bey for the 2nd year in row. Glasper, Dave and Hodge first came together in 2003, and soon became a seminal musical force; while Robert simultaneously became the Musical Director for Yasiin (Previously Mos Def). Together they forged a sound that was not only the backdrop to the era’s hiphop and R&B stars (Nas, Maxwell, Common…and more!) – but also the vanguard of a new jazz flavor, which won a whole new audience with its genre-breaking style.

James’s voice is beautiful: versatile and precise, but also powerful and rich. He uses his vocal skills to belt out honest, relatable lyrics. That genuine quality shines through in his live performances, where he seems to be truly enjoying himself. It makes sense that James loves what he does, given the way he’s pressed forward toward the music career he began dreaming of at age 11.

The song starts off with classic R&B vibes from Ro James on the first verse. Following the intro, Ro James gets sexual with his explicit lyrics while still giving off a cool vibe throughout the song with his smooth yet highly pitch vocals.

As your co-worker I see your obvious walk with your Savior and know that you will not only grow from this but understand His meaning for Lukes life ending so abruptly. Your family’s continued crusade will give you the strength to rise above all in His light.

Life! In totality, all the way around! Up and down, thru and thru: life! The full spectrum, not just my own, but all life forms, you know, the trees, the birds, the people, the animals, the insects, the water, the sky, the clouds, I mean everything! I’m moved by life, I’m moved by God! Life is an endless inspirational ocean.

For me, it is the need to be relevant. I want my music to be presented on a platform that enables it to be heard by many people, rather than just a specific group. It’s a matter of getting your music out there for the world to hear and hoping that people gravitate towards it. As far as financially, there’s that line of, I want to do music that I like and my friends like and love,” and there may be a lot of money in that, but not right at the forefront. So the question is, do you comprise? Do you do something that’s different or should you do something that’s easy and risk-free? I think it’s better to take the chance with making music that is in sync with your identity and not worry about the money. If it works then it works, and if it doesn’t, it doesn’t.

If you can’t feel what’s happening in the world you need to check yourself, you need to jump outside of yourself and look at someone else’s life, aside from your own. We all need to help each other by any means necessary, you know. Project positive energy out to the world, in whatever you do in your life. I mean just simple thing of walking outside and saying hello to strangers and breaking the ice with people and, you know, using your platform, your social media to enlighten people. Any little thing helps and matters, whether it’s sharing something, putting something up for discussion, or even just for other people to see it so they can have their own interpretation. I think it takes people to just open themselves up, you know, to project positive energy, be a big enough light of self love and then go from there.

In 2013, James landed his first on-screen role in the Kasi Lemmons-directed family drama Black Nativity. He then went on to portray singer Johnny Gill in BET’s hit biopics The New Edition Story and The Bobby Brown Story.

My deepest condolences to you and your family. I can’t begin to imagine what you are going through. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Please let me know if there is anything I, or the rest of your extended family here at TUCC, can do.

The song gets even more enticing when Luke Bryan takes over the third verse. The R&B and jazz singer details his sexual encounters with his lover at this point in the song. Luke James’ brand of boudoir R&B has earned him some A-list fans, not the least of which is Queen Bey herself, who handpicked him to open for her 2013 tour, both in Europe and North America.

Luke James has recently merged his promising musical career with an even glitzier endeavor: acting. When the heart is misled by the prospect of love and the head says, ‘I knew it wasn’t real,’ Sydney Franklin and Luke James Shaffer’s Blood in the Water” lends a strong united voice to the ache.

Earlier this summer, he released the playfully sexy These Arms,” a stretched-out salute to love’s simpler pleasures. Over slowly blooming keyboards and heartbeat-pace snaps, James describes the excitement and contentment he derives from our love’s inner pull,” a feeling so delightful it sends his voice into falsetto range within 20 seconds. But that’s far from the end; Arms” ebbs and flows in a delectably tense way over the ensuing five minutes, with cascading chorales accompanying James’ acrobatic vocals until keyboard twinkles signal a satisfied fade to black. These Arms” is an ideal accompaniment for the waning days of summer, its reveling in the now mirroring the limitless vibe of those last weekends before autumn arrives.

Robert Glasper is the leader of a new paradigm in jazz, with a career that spans musical and artistic genres, winning 3 Grammys and 6 nominations across 5 categories, as well as an Emmy for his song on Ava Duvernay’s doc 13th”.

LJ: I hope so. Bey is a big sister, she’s a huge supporter. I mean, the whole Destiny’s Child family—Kelly and Michelle—they’ve always been great supporters of mine, in all my endeavors. So, definitely. The sky’s the limit.

Luke James was the lightning rod that brought everyone together on the rooftop in an Atlanta penthouse maybe because he was going to dance. Regina Hall flew in allegedly to support us as a producer but probably also to enjoy Luke James’ dancing. It was a great memory: it was like a hot night and we were on this gorgeous rooftop in Atlanta, overlooking the city with great music playing and Luke is just the kindest, most generous actor who can sing and dance. It was near the end of production, we just relaxed and Luke was dancing for us.

We can’t imagine the dual nature of this event for you. On the one hand, Luke is in His presence. But as human’s we know Luke’s absence from this world is painful to those of you who love him so much.

Well, my mom inspired that love for sure. We always had a piano in the house, which she played for me, and she had a beautiful collection of music. Vinyls, a whole closet full of vinyls, I remember this! And then Katrina happened and all that got wiped away. Donny Hathaway changed my life, Marvin Gaye changed my life, we used to listen to country, there was so much music in the house.

I found the feeling again where I felt something fresh could come out,” says James. Writing songs helped me figure out what my lane was as far as being a solo artist. And I’ve also learned something else: If I don’t feel it, I can’t do it.

Tremendously! The experience recording with Babyface, Jimmy Jam, and Terry Lewis outside of filming was terrific. You have to indulge in the time and the era. Also, we learned their pronunciations and habits, and we just wanted to dive in and be as dynamic as possible portraying these character. To do that, I had to dig in my bag of R&B, and just listen to so much music. The songs that I heard as a child. I do not think until then I ever really lived with it. So, yeah the experience opened me up to listening to the music again, in a whole different type of way.

Luke James Shaffer has been a full-time singer songwriter for almost a decade. Playing original and cover shows all over from NYC to California to Canada to Italy. Hold the memories of Luke close to your heart for comfort, âÎé¼┬¿lean on your friends and family for strength, âÎé¼┬¿and always know that you are loved and cared about.

As a kid, what I loved about music, is what I did not want to get outside of as a creator. I want to create music that moves me, not just music that is going to get me famous or make someone at a label happy. You know what I mean? I need to record what is going to make me happy, and what is going to be fulfilling for me really. I think I am in that place right now, for sure. Not even think, I know I am in that place right now.

I feel like I’m still growing so it’s been pretty cool (laughs). And yes, you know being by myself had naturally forced me to creatively find alternatives to siblings. Music was my second best friend, my mother being my first. I was a wild child, I guess I still am. I would also say that growing up in solitude helps me now in life to be alone and not be afraid to be alone. Alone with my own thoughts, to check my energy and my mind-set. It helped me to walk to my own tune, you know, be myself, and I’m grateful for that.

The music video for aforementioned “Dancing in the Dark,” directed by James himself, sparked early excitement and anticipation for the album drop. The song was inspired by a live performance of a Prince concert, where Prince stopped the music mid-show , had the venue turn all the lights off and encouraged the audience to get lost in the song and jam to the sounds — hence, the song’s title. The video (probably NSFW), with provocative and striking visuals, features James and a leading lady stripping down under the moon.

While in high school in 2001, James joined a trio that started performing around New Orleans, opening for such acts as Brian McKnight. That’s when James first met his longtime manager Frank Gatson. When things with the trio didn’t work out, James moved to Los Angeles after graduation—on the advice of Gatson—and began singing background for R&B singer Tyrese. It was through the singer that James met production duo the Underdogs and signed with their label as part of a singing duo: Luke & Q.

And his role on Star has proved to be the perfect blend of his musical and acting talents. Cast as Noah Brooks, an embattled singer with an ambitious streak, James says his character will prove to be triumphant this season.
