For most of its duration, Ross engages in the kind of braggadocio that made the first Port of Miami fresh and exciting. But instead of replicating that album’s brash production style and lyricism, he opts for a glamorous, R&B-esque style that deadens the record’s impact. Three-quarters of the songs are celebratory — the kind of tunes a drug dealer might blast when he’s on a champagne-and-strippers bender. But they aren’t interesting, and it’s clear no thought went into track sequencing or adding any king of narrative beyond “I’m rich.” Ross may be from Miami, but this album isn’t about the city — it’s about Ross and Ross only.
Rick Ross is an American rapper, songwriter, entrepreneur and founder of the Maybach Music Group. All ten of his albums have landed in the Top 10 of the Billboard 200, including five No. 1 debuts. He has received four Grammy Award nominations, and his single Hustlin” was the first song ever to reach certified platinum status before its associated album was released. He has worked closely with Jay-Z, Kanye West, Diddy, Drake, Lil Wayne and DJ Khaled, among many others. He lives in Miami. Hurricanes is his first book.
In August 2019, Ross unveiled his 10th studio album, Port of Miami 2, which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. As much as he glorifies the criminal life in his music, Rick Ross had once been a Florida correctional officer.
However, it was Ross’s focus on the hits which left the Port of Miami 2 Tour with surprisingly little Port of Miami 2. The recently released album is, once again, getting Ross rave reviews, featuring familiar collaborations with Drake, Meek Mill, and Wale, but also offerings from newer talent like A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie and Summer Walker.
In January 2009, Ross started a feud with rapper 50 Cent because he supposedly looked at him the wrong way at the BET Hip Hop Awards in 2008. 50 Cent told news sources that he did not remember seeing Ross there. 89 In late January, “Mafia Music”, by Ross, leaked onto the Internet. There were several lines that seemed to diss 50 Cent. Days later, 50 Cent released “Officer Ricky (Go Head, Try Me)” in response to Ross’s disparaging remarks on his “Mafia Music” song.
Now, Ross’ rank isn’t even a question. Few can boast what he’s done: nine classic albums, more than a dozen platinum singles and his own hit record label, all without faltering. It’s only right that for his 10th studio album, Ross return to where it started.
Like every up and coming MC, Ross – influenced by Golden Era b-boys that reigned supreme in the late 80s – just wanted to be heard during his introduction into hip-hop in the late 90s. While the desire and the artistry have been Ross hallmarks from career commencement, he had to learn the fine of art of structuring record contracts as well figure out a way to market and promote himself to the public when his former record labels couldn’t.
The father of four children, Ross endured a health scare in 2011 when he suffered multiple seizures on two separate flights on the same day. In March 2018, TMZ reported that the rapper had been hospitalized and hooked up to life support upon being found unresponsive at his home, before earning his discharge a few days later. However, his family disputed that account of events, suggesting that Ross’s condition wasn’t as bad as initially believed.
As a kid, nobody ever came to me to say, ‘Man, you don’t know your multiplication but you could still become richer than anybody who ever went to this school,’” says Ross, who also details growing up in the tough Carol City neighborhood of Miami Gardens, Florida.
Rick Ross founded the record label Maybach Music Group in 2009, on which he released his studio albums Deeper Than Rap (2009), Teflon Don (2010), God Forgives, I Don’t (2012), Mastermind, Hood Billionaire (2014), Black Market (2015), and Rather You Than Me (2017). Ross was also the first artist signed to Diddy’s management company Ciroc Entertainment. In early 2012, MTV named Ross as the Hottest MC in the Game.
In 2010, reformed drug kingpin Freeway” Ricky Ross sued the rapper in a $10 million copyright infringement lawsuit for using his name. Since 2011, reports of Ross enduring seizures have made the news and he’s addressed his health in and outside of music. In 2013, he was reportedly the target of a drive-by shooting. In 2018, he was hospitalized and on life support after another health scare.

While his stories of struggle and grinding from nothing to the top still do resonate, Rick Ross is running in place, possibly lacking inspiration now that music has become a gateway to other ventures not limited to chicken wing chains. Ross employs a formula that’s carried him this far: he plays a lawless character over beats that traditional diehards wish Nas would take instead. But Port of Miami 2 shows that even the most beautiful of houses can feel empty inside.

The way Rozay explains it, the flash and cash his lifestyle portrays go deeper than flagrant materialism. It leaves a roadmap for others behind him to follow — from no way out to a yellow brick road of possibilities.
Box Chevy was released in early 2013 in order to stir up anticipation for his forthcoming sixth studio album MasterMind. However, when the album dropped a year later — debuting at #1 on the Billboard 200 with sales exceeding 179,000 in the first week — the single was left out of the album. Perhaps because the song had already been a fixture in radios for over a year.
Running a label didn’t appear to slow down Ross’ personal output. Teflon Don in 2010 was followed by the MMG compilation Self Made Vol. 1 a year later, and then by God Forgives, I Don’t in 2012. During this time he worked with Kanye West , Gucci Mane, CeeLo Green , Drake , Dr. Dre and Andre 3000.
