tech n9ne tour 2018 – Town Ballroom

TECH N9NEFour days ago, Tech N9ne aka Techa Nina dropped a bomb off his thirteenth studio album, N9na , and it landed on all of our stankfaces. The tour, per usual with Strange Music, was a grueling affair: 43 shows in 45 days. That style of touring, still in place almost a decade later, reflects the hard-working personalities of Tech and his Strange co-founder Travis ‘Guin.

To close the set, Tech and Krizz performed “Speedom (Worldwide Choppers 2),” a song inspired by folk rocker Richie Havens’ original classic “Freedom.” After years traveling his own path, it’s a fitting way to define Tech N9ne’s wildly independent approach.

Touring certainly helped spread the word, and the rapper’s over the top stage show locked some fans in for good, but Tech didn’t feel his label was being honest about sales, so he left JCOR and took Strange Music with him. The label released Absolute Power in 2002, with Strange artists Krizz Kaliko and Kutt Calhoun making guest appearances on the album along with Eminem ‘s dark crew D12 Everready (The Religion) followed in 2006 with Krizz and Kutt joined by Brotha Lynch Hung to represent the Strange Music roster, while an E-40 guest spot continued Tech’s crossover journey, which came to include his music on video game soundtracks (25 to Live, Madden NFL 06). The album debuted at number 50 on the Billboard 200 albums chart.

One of the most intriguing figures in the hip-hop world, Tech N9ne is known for his unique rapping style that features complex rhyme schemes and speedy, Chopper-style flows. His intricate flows and lyricism has captivated hip-hop heads throughout his entire career that has lasted for more than twenty years. He has released thirteen studio-albums alone, and has collaborated with scores of artists, including Busta Rhymes, Yelawolf, Twista, T-Pain, Kendrick Lamar, Sway, Hopsin, Three 6 Mafia, Lil Wayne, Yukmouth, Jay-Z, Insane Clown Posse, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Canibus, Jay Rock, Trae Tha Truth, E-40, Machine Gun Kelly, and R.A. the Rugged Man, among others. In 2013, he addressed the rumor that he was a devil worshiper, to which he promptly brushed off, noting that in leading his cult-like following, he intends to spread love, not hate. He released both a studio-album and an EP in 2013, and has yet to announce plans for an upcoming project.

Tech N9ne has many accomplishments. But he’s also an artist who prides himself on delivering music that contains substantial content for his listeners. We recently sat down with Tech N9ne and spoke about his new album, how he compares lyrically to Kendrick Lamar, and the last words his mother ever said to him.

The Storm’s first single Erbody But Me” fits perfectly in the Kingdom” section of The Storm. On the kinetic cut, Tech N9ne deflects detractors and salutes his swag, while the percussive Wifi (WeeFee)” trumpets Tech N9ne’s status as a plug as he delivers some intricate alliterative rhyming. Elsewhere, the raucous Sriracha” features Logic and Joyner Lucas, both of whom asked Tech N9ne to appear on the cut after hearing an early version of the Michael Seven” Summers-produced cut. Thanks in part to his guests on the song, Sriracha” evolved into something different from how Tech N9ne first imagined it.

One of hip-hop’s most technically advanced wordsmiths, Tech N9ne’s performances speed by with the explosive energy of a rock show and the high-velocity feats of an athletic event. Playing dozens of shows every year, Tech N9ne is one of rap’s hardest-working live acts.

At Tech N9ne concerts you can expect to hear a harmonious, smooth sound coming from the rapper’s microphones that are unique to this performer. Above and beyond lyrics you can understand, you will also be met with a performance that is not like anything you have seen before. The music never stops for set changes, which will have you on the edge of your seat with excitement throughout the entire show. With actual theatrics and stage production, a Tech N9ne concert will be one you will never forget. It’s an all-inclusive audio and visual experience.

The Strange Music rapper quieted the confusion from social media following reports of the 32-year-old’s passing. TECH N9NE: Yes. I write my life. Tech N9ne’s Planet Tour 2018 was also an opportunity to showcase artists on his label, Strange Music.

TECH N9NE: And I’m not normal, and it’s weird. But I ran from all those stories. I will never do that again. It was crazy, because that’s all they want. They’re like, “We want you to do more dark” — they want you to die. I can’t die. I have to eat.TECH N9NE

Boulevard Brewing and Tech N9ne have deep roots in Kansas City. Boulevard released its first beer in 1989. Two years later, Tech N9ne began his musical career. In the years since, both have flourished beyond their wildest dreams, becoming institutions in their shared hometown and parts well beyond.

Anticipation for Tech N9ne’s forthcoming album, N9NA, is steadily building as the singles garner more and more attention from critics and fans alike. N9NA is set to drop on April 19, 2019, just as the tour begins.

As the show came to an end, Tech N9ne said to his fans, “I went to (Bru Burger) before the show and had a patty melt, Evansville! The patty melt is getting caught right up here,” pointing to his throat.

Tech N9ne is the most successful independent artist in rap history. His “Caribou Lou” single was certified platinum in 2017, while his “Hood Go Crazy” and “Fragile” singles were both certified gold in 2016. The Missouri rapper started 2019 with back-to-back tours in Europe and Canada with Krizz Kaliko. His European trek took him to more than 15 countries, including England, France, Russia, Sweden, and Ireland.

TECH N9NE: Some people just do it because it’s their job. I tell people, “Let me just get my following all the way up and people will want to call us to talk to us.” That’s just how I feel. Rapper Tech N9ne sends condolences to battle rapper Tech 9’s family.

Jaws gives N9ne, Stevie Stone and Jeffrey “Frizz”, two other artists on the Strange Music Canadian tour, physical obstacles they have to complete every day. Rapper Krizz Kalliko , who’s also on the tour, isn’t working out because he’s on a low-carb Keto diet and doesn’t have the energy to train, says N9ne.

Richie Abbott, who was running urban publicity for Warner at the time, remembers the move very well. He says Moscowitz realized Southern rappers, like the ones he was working with at Asylum, were running things, and prioritized accordingly.

Jay Rock needed a hype man. He was in search of someone to keep the crowd going during his set, and perhaps to sneak in a song or two of his own, as well. So Lamar, who had just completed Overly Dedicated and was by this time rapping under his real name, fell into the role.

Hip-hop superstars like Kendrick Lamar , Lupe Fiasco, Lloyd Banks, and many more remembered the late rapper on Twitter. Fans — and even family members — of Kansas City, Mo.-based rapper Tech N9ne (real name Aaron Dontez Yates) were momentarily confused by the news.

Tech had Top 5 debuts with releases like 2011’s All 6’s and 7’s, 2013’s Something Else, and 2015’s Special Effects. In those albums, his genre-crossing style and jaw-dropping abilities found him working with superstars like Kendrick Lamar, Eminem, Lil Wayne, The Doors, Serj Tankian of System of a Down, and Corey Taylor of Slipknot.

While he debuted in the underground realm of horrorcore and seemed destined to be a future footnote, rapper Tech N9ne grew to be an indie rap superstar. In the process, he built his Strange Music label into a Psychopathic Records-styled empire with an accompanying loyal fan base, but when it comes to influence, Tech arguably topped underground trailblazers Insane Clown Posse thanks to collaborations with mainstream artists and a style that evolved from horrorcore to hardcore and confessional. Issuing a quartet of Top Five albums in the early 2010s – All 6’s and 7’s, Something Else, Strangeulation, and Special Effects – he built a vast and devoted audience with little help from the mainstream.

FRANNIE: So I’ve heard you say, and you’re saying it right now, that people want things from you and kind of — people do I think sort of put you in the horrorcore category sometimes. It’s obvious that King Iso and Joey Cool are the up and coming stars on Tech N9ne’s label.

Strange’s new home in the Kansas City suburbs features plush, wood-panelled offices, an in-house video-editing facility and a warehouse. Outside there is parking for the fleet of sleeper-buses Strange now owns, and a dedicated recording studio and rehearsal space is being built.

But I would be fake as hell to say, “OK. This is going to make me the most money, so I’m just going to do this one thing.” That’s when I die. So I’m going to do me, and my face is still painted every once in a while, and that’s all me. The people that see it and like, “OK. That’s horrorcore,” nah, that’s my real life. That’s my real life stories if you listen. It’s my real life. It’s not fake.

Rapper Tech N9ne (Aaron Dontez Yates) has found memories of performing in Cleveland. He’s played in town numerous times over the years, often at the now defunct Peabody’s, a venue that hosted metal and hardcore as much as hip-hop.

As per usual, there are many appearances by his Strange Music crew in the video, including Ubiquitous, whose performance as a tweaked-out inmate leads us to surmise that he flew in straight from the cuckoo’s nest. Krizz Kaliko also does a fine job as Tech’s accomplice throughout the mini film.

Tech N9ne performed for the first time in Evansville at the Old National Events Plaza Monday night. While the house that strange built started with those two men, its current success would not have been possible without the other high caliber artists who have joined the label over the years.

Rapper Nipsey Hussle, a Los Angeles fixture known for his community involvement and dedication to West Coast hip-hop, was shot to death March 31. Hussle (born Ermias Asghedom), 33, broke into the rap scene with his mixtapes and went on to collaborate with hip-hop stars including Kendrick Lamar, Childish Gambino and Snoop Dogg.

TECH N9NE: Yes, man. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Grammy winner Kendrick Lamar and Superstar” rapper Lupe Fiasco were among the fans who paid tribute to Tech 9 on social media following word of his death. Tech N9ne’s “It Goes Up Tour 2019” gave attendees an exclusive first look at Kathartic – Episode 1.

TECH N9NE: Yeah. I write what I feel, and if it touches somebody, then they’ll connect. It’s stories that I have in that little black box in the back of my head that I keep secrets. Every once in a while I might take something out and tell a story. I told one on my new album that drops March 2. It’s a song called ” Tappin’ In ,” where I tell a story that might piss some people off from back then. But every once in a while I go in and pull it out.

Even though he debuted in the underground realm of horrorcore and seemed destined to be a future footnote, rapper Tech N9ne grew to become an indie rap superstar. In the middle of a show at Kansas City’s Sprint Center, Lamar took a few minutes between songs to thank some very special audience members.

Back in 2015, Tech N9ne released Wither ” featuring Corey Taylor. The track addresses Tech’s darkness as it was happening, and when Loudwire premiered the song, Tech compared its theme to the day Slipknot guitarist Mick Thomson was stabbed by his brother.

Tech 9 was a battle rapper who had been powerful in his community for over 10 years. Though he never branched over to mainstream, radio rap music, he was well respected by many famous artists. Kendrick Lamar, Lupe Fiasco and others issued statements of mourning and respect to the notable lyricist on Twitter Monday.

During a career nearly three decades in the making, Tech N9ne has dodged the fickle rap industry while surfing his own wave, stylistically and professionally. The Kansas City native has been a beast for years now, a musical misfit who laid a track record of underground success and struggle before building his own independent empire with Strange Music.

TECH N9NE: I’m supposed to say that. I’m supposed to say that, because it’s my new record. I’m supposed to say that. No. It’s going to speak for itself. It’s like, I’m supposed to say that, but I’m going to — I would — if it wasn’t, I would say, “It’s a dope album that I put together. Wait till y’all hear it.” But this is the best music I’ve done in a long while.

TECH N9NE: It was hard to get the vocoder right, to get it thick like, “It’s tiiiiime.” It was so hard. It took us, like, weeks. TECH N9NE: Yeah. I just don’t — I like talking to people that know. With rapid-fire rhymes and unique beats, Tech N9ne’s music generally has listeners bumping songs at full blast, even when the tunes are about mixed drinks or Sriracha.
