13. In addition to Gloria,” The Lumineers debuted Nightshade” as part of the Game of Thrones soundtrack last week. I contacted their management Onto Entertainment in Seattle with a view to signing them to Fairfax Recordings.

In collaboration with Fraites, whose expressive piano plays a central role in the drama and beauty of these songs, Schultz refined and connected the characters who inhabited the songs they’d worked up. There would be a family tree spanning three generations: the grandmother, Gloria Sparks; her son, Jimmy Sparks; and her grandson, Junior Sparks. Denver, Colorado’s The Lumineers released their eponymous debut album through Nashville’s Dualtone in 2012. The triple platinum album garnered two GRAMMY nominations and spawned the chart-topping platinum singles, Ho Hey” and Stubborn Love.” The band also served as Saturday Night Live’s musical guest on January 19, 2013.
The Meadowlark was a gathering place for the musicians in Denver’s close-knit music scene — a place where the Lumineers would run into local folk-pop heroes like the songwriter Nathaniel Rateliff and the band Paper Bird And there, two songs at a time, the Lumineers were building the local following that would begin the band’s momentum toward its current Top 10 single, Ho Hey,” and two nominations at Sunday’s Grammy Awards, for best new artist and best Americana album.
Dylan Owens is a Denver-based writer and former music critic for The Denver Post. He listens exclusively to your favorite band and takes great comfort in the fact that at any given point, Road House” is on TV somewhere.
A dark concept album — an album whose songs connect into a larger narrative — marks a departure for The Lumineers. The album is separated into three chapters, exploring three generations of a fictitious family called the Sparks. Gloria” is about love between an addict and her family,” vocalist Wesley Schultz said in a press release. Check out the full tracklist for the album below, which includes a song called Left for Denver,” ostensibly the new anthem for the city’s never-ending stream of transplants.
Gloria’s grandson moves to Denver after substance abuse takes over his father’s life. In addition to the tour dates, the band announces that the song “Leader Of The Landslide,” will be released Friday, August 2nd and a video will be available on Monday, August 5th.
The feels truly start to hit during the Jimmy Sparks chapter of the album. My Cell” is hauntingly beautiful, and it really hits home if you have ever gone through times where you just felt so alone. Jimmy Sparks” has a unique sound in comparison to the rest of the album. The storytelling is perfect and ends the song with an extreme plot twist, furthering the notion that III isn’t just music but a movie. Salt And The Sea” is pleasant to listen to because of the shift in the tone of voice throughout the song, especially in the refrain.
The Lumineers have announced a 2020 headlining North American tour and will visit Little Caesars Arena in The District Detroit on Friday, February 7 at 7 p.m. The tour dates are in support of their upcoming album III out September 13 on Dualtone (an Entertainment One Company) in the U.S. and Canada, and on Decca Records for the rest of the world. Mt. Joy, who recently emerged as a fast and furious 21st century success story” (Magnet) will be support.
Mr. Schultz and Mr. Fraites grew up in Ramsey, N.J. and have been writing together since 2005. Along the way, Mr. Schultz said, he changed from being a wordy singer-songwriter to prizing melody first.
The next parts are more ambiguous with what they represent, although part two clearly follows the results of her actions. It Wasn’t Easy To Be Happy For You,” the first song of this part, has a more pop sound and is the climax of the album, with its easy going guitar strumming that gave me Hey Jude” vibes. Part two contains the most energetic songs of the album, taking the characteristic Lumineers sound and turning them into potential pop hits.
Soon the band was fielding offers from labels large and small, some of them no doubt looking for the next Mumford & Sons. The Lumineers chose a one-album deal with the independent Dualtone label. They weren’t expecting to be in the Top 10.
For this group, music has always come before image, despite an increase in fans approaching them for pictures (the new autograph”). Wesley cut his teeth on classic rock, rarely knowing or caring what his favourite stars looked like because their songs were all he needed.
The Lumineers had completed a home-recorded album in Denver. But they were persuaded to hold it back and remake the songs in a professional studio. And what may at first sound like arrangements tossed together on a back porch actually, on closer listening, reveal careful choices about how instruments, vocals and effects are deployed.
Denver, it turned out, had been nurturing its own music. The city is isolated from the standard rock tour circuit; it’s a long drive to the next big city — eight hours to Salt Lake City, nine to Kansas City — and more than 1,000 miles to Los Angeles. That left room for homegrown music.
The work is titled III not just because it’s The Lumineers’ third full-length album, but more significantly because nine songs are presented in three chapters, each focusing on one of three main characters (in addition to the nine songs the album contains an instrumental plus three more bonus songs that don’t fit in the narrative). The chapters also serves as the visual bookend for a sequential video series comprising the nine tracks, each directed by Kevin Phillips (whose 2017 film Super Dark Times is streaming on Netflix).
When it came time to record the album, which was produced by kindred spirit Simone Felice of New York band the Felice Brothers , Fraites had the piano shipped to Felice’s studio in the Catskills. Felice grumbled about the instrument, which proved difficult to record evenly. But the piano created the sound the band was going for — particularly on III’s opening track, Donna,” a depressing slow burner that begins with a dusty scale, soft but unnerving.
The roots revival of the last few years has primed listeners for a new generation of rustic, heart-on-the-sleeve music-the kind that nods to tradition while setting off into uncharted territory. The Lumineers walk that line with an unerring gift for timeless melodies and soul-stirring lyrics.
Left For Denver”, the last song of Chapter II, will be available on August 16 with the video coming on August 19. All the videos for III are directed by Kevin Phillips and produced by Neighborhood Watch. Phillips is known for his films Super Dark Times and Too Cool For School.
Every month the Inside Track series poses the question “How did you mix that hit?” The answers given by different mix engineers can vary greatly, but nearly always involve a state-of-the-art DAW, hundreds of tracks and plug-ins, and frequently a massive automated mixer and a huge quantity of outboard gear too. However, some people still wave the flag for different ways of working, one of them being Kevin Augunas. The producer, mixer and engineer has worked with the Black Keys, Lostprophets, Melissa auf der Maur, Cold War Kids, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, J-Roddy Walston and the Business and Jon Brion, and last year mixed the Lumineers’ self-titled debut album, which reached the US top 10 — an impressive achievement for the hitherto completely unknown folk trio from Denver, Colorado.
Heart-wrenching words, especially the way Schultz expressed them through his anguished croon. As the song progressed Thursday, Schultz became mad as hell, bluntly cursing out his mother for blaming her children on her addiction.
The piano melody was pretty but melancholic, and as the lyrics came out, bitterness took over the sound. Donna” is a song about a reluctant mother and a dysfunctional family, and the music video pushes the emotions that catalyze the song as you follow a mother who clearly does not want to be there.
The band almost left Ho Hey” off the album. Recording it took months and months and months, and we didn’t like any of it,” Mr. Schultz recalled. The Lumineers are bringing III: The World Tour with Mt. Joy to KeyBank Center on February 26, 2020 at 7:00pm. Every online ticket includes a copy of The Lumineers’ new album, III” out September 13th.
Leader Of The Landslide”, the next song from Junior Sparks will be released on August 2 with a video for it coming August 5, and the chapter’s third song Left For Denver” will be available on August 16 with the video coming August 19. All the videos for III are directed by Kevin Phillips and produced by Neighborhood Watch. Phillips is known for his filmsSuper Dark Times and Too Cool For School. The video stars Charlie Tahan (Super Dark Times, Ozark) and Emily Kimball (Undeserved, Bad Samaritan).
The Lumineers will tour in support of the new album, with their III: The World Tour” trek kicking off this summer with a series of festivals. The band will perform at Bonnaroo Music Festival, Outside Lands and Woodstock Music & Arts. They will tour in Europe and the U.K. in November with more dates to be announced. Tickets for the Europe and U.K. run go on sale Friday April 12.
RAZ: When we got their CD in the mail, it included a quote from lead singer Wesley Schultz. It was published in The New York Times back in 1992 when Wesley was just 9 years old. And here’s the quote. It says: I spend a lot of time on my drawings, and it turns out real good because I’ve been practicing a lot. Well, the article was about a musician. He was visiting Wesley’s school at the time. Anyway, that quote was about wanting to be an artist. And a few years ago, a friend of Wesley’s dug it up and sent it to him.
Perhaps the biggest change for Schultz and Fraites occurred around a year and a half ago, when each had a child, adding new kinds of stress and joy to the rigors of writing, recording and global touring.
In March 2015 — after the Lumineers had settled in Denver and Ho Hey” had been featured on Saturday Night Live and a beer commercial, leaving people humming I belong with you, you belong with me, my sweet-heaa-aart” — Fraites shared his amusement on Facebook, revealing I was also a muse.
Gloria” has already proven a landmark release for The Lumineers, earning critical acclaim while topping the charts at multi-format radio outlets nationwide, including Americana,” Adult Alternative,” and Alternative,” spending six consecutive weeks at #1 on the latter chart. In addition, the band marked the release of Gloria” with performances of the song on CBS’ Late Show with Stephen Colbert (streaming HERE ) and ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! (streaming HERE ). The Lumineers will return to perform on NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon tomorrow, Tuesday, September 17.
