Family Life is bringing Zach Williams to Syracuse! WILLIAMS GREW UP IN A HOME FILLED WITH LOVING PARENTS WHO CREATED A SAFE WORLD FOR HIM TO LIVE IN, SURROUNDED BY FAMILY MEMBERS AND NEIGHBORS WHO ENCOURAGED HIM. YET THE SAFETY AND SECURITY OF THAT CHILDHOOD SEEMED LIKE A DISTANT MEMORY AS WILLIAMS WATCHED HIS LIFE SPIRAL OUT OF CONTROL OVER A DECADE LATER.
Grammy winner Zach Williams recorded his latest work, a six-song EP, in Nashville’s Harding Prison. Zach Williams never intended to become a musician — or to perform in prison.
But music would return to him outside of his church’s walls at around the time he and his wife started getting involved in prison ministry. ZACH WILLIAMS WAS BORN AND RAISED IN A SMALL TOWN OUTSIDE JONESBORO, ARKANSAS, NOT UNLIKE ANDY GRIFFITH’S MAYBERRY OR A SCENE FROM THE GOONIES.
Meanwhile, the new album’s title-track lead single hits the top 10 on both Hot Christian Songs and Christian Airplay on the latest, Sept. 28-dated surveys, and Williams performs an exclusive live version on the podcast.
Now, the father of 2, Zach is bringing others to God through his music and it’s absolutely inspiring to hear this story straight from him. What a testimony.

Before embarking on his solo career in the Christian genre, singer-songwriter Zach Williams , 41, from Jonesboro, Arkansas, fronted a rock band, Zach Williams & The Reformation, which launched in 2007.
Has your life changed because of your experience with MOC? It has really helped solidify the power of music. I can play bluegrass music till my ears bleed and not think twice about it. When you are immersed in music it is easy to take it for granted. But playing one-on-one concerts bedside at hospitals shows that the simplest song can help a person get through some tough times with a smile and thinking of fond memories.
As for Williams, he continues to find the light in his life again. When he’s not involved in church, family or prison ministry, he’s in the kitchen cooking up a meal. His TV, he said, is constantly tuned to the Food Network.

His personal testimony of receiving freedom in the Lord is so beautifully reflected in his debut single Chain Breaker”. The song came from a place of wanting to reach people who had been struggling and it undoubtedly has. Over the course of its release in the summer of 2016, an influx of stories have been shared on his various social media pages by people who have experienced the life changing power of broken chains. He has since released a special project Survivor: Live From Harding Prison in partnership with Men of Valor that was recorded live at a prison in Nashville, TN.
After that, Zach transitioned in to a position at the Refuge Campus of Central Baptist Church in Jonesboro, Arkansas in which he still serves. It came as a shock when the opportunity to sign with Provident Label Group as a new Christian artist arose. Never in his wildest dreams did Zach Williams think that he would be in this place of writing and recording music in the Christian music industry, especially from years of hard living on the road while in a rock & roll band.
I spent a year and a half on this record, in a season of just kind of reflecting on what God has done in my life. It’s really the first time since the success of the Chain Breaker” album that I’ve kind of had a chance to kind of get a breath and look around and see what’s happened. And you know, as I started to look around and see what happened in three years, I started looking to 20 years ago when I first started playing music and the places I was and the people I was running with, how God protected me and kept me out of certain things that honestly, at the moment, I didn’t even realize it. Looking back, I can see that He was preparing this way and putting all this together. And I just feel really honored to be here and just have the opportunities that I have now.
Zach Williams’ album The Rescue Story” comes out Friday, Oct. 4. He is kicking off the Rescue Story Tour” in Syracuse on Thursday, Oct. 10. We spoke with Williams about his music and upcoming tour. This interview has been edited for clarity and length.
Even though I grew up going to church every Sunday as a kid, even though I knew right from wrong and said I was a Christian, there was absolutely nothing about the way I was living that reflected these things,” Williams shares. It took a trip to Europe in 2012 to stop me dead in my tracks and show me just how lost I really was.” That year, with his wife by his side, his faith became real to him and he found renewal by dedicating his life to Christ. He hasn’t looked back since.
Zach Williams is a reporter who covers state politics and the legislature, and also produces the Nonprofit First Read newsletter. Never in his wildest dreams did Zach Williams think that he would be in this place of writing and recording music in the Christian music industry, especially from years of hard living on the road while in a rock & roll band. He thought his life was fulfilling and he was doing what he had always wanted to do, but that left him empty, lonely, and further away from God and his family than ever before. For years he sought meaning and fulfillment in the unhealthy, and sometimes dangerous, lifestyle he was living. He eventually found refuge in a fellow band mate, thanks to their countless late nights on the road talking about God, faith and what their lives could actually be like beyond the band.

What is your favorite song to play for patients? My go to MOC approved song is Stand by Me”. Whether it’s the first song I play or when no one can make up their mind on picking a song. Other than that, I prefer playing songs people request out of the blue. A recent one was a 90-year-old woman who lost her husband within the last few years. His favorite song was What a Wonderful World”. After I played it she ended up telling me lots of stories about him (from his sunny disposition to how he handled robberies while working at banks) and before I left trying to set me up with her granddaughter. It also always surprises me when New Yorkers want to hear some old country songs by- Johnny Cash, Jim Reeves, and Hank Williams Sr to name a few. The songs played are just half of the equation. The stories that people share ABOUT the song they requested is always so much better than the song itself.
His album was produced by Jonathan Smith and Colby Wedgeworth. The success of the debut songs and the album earned him several awards and nominations, including a Grammy win in 2018 for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album. Other recognitions included five nominations from the GMA Dove Awards. He won two of them.
Have you been a part of an impromptu jam session? No jam sessions with other instruments but many people do like to sing along. My favorite was when I went home to Tennessee for Thanksgiving. I reached out to the Nashville coordinator and worked out some time slots for me to play in Nashville. This one room was filled with several generations of family who, I assume, have been singing together since birth. They requested several gospel songs and immediately jumped in singing and arranging the harmony parts. We could have left the hospital after that and headed down to Broadway and made quite the living just busking.
williams grew up in a home filled with loving parents who created a safe world for him to live in, surrounded by family members and neighbors who encouraged him. yet the safety and security of that childhood seemed like a distant memory as williams watched his life spiral out of control over a decade later.
It was just a mere three years ago when Williams rapidly made a name for himself with his record-breaking debut single, Chain Breaker,” following it up with two more award-winning songs, Old Church Choir” and Fear Is a Liar.” Two versions of his debut album have released, Chain Breaker and the Deluxe Edition , as well as an EP, Survivor: Live From Harding Prison Williams has earned a coveted GRAMMY Award (2018) and two additional nominations (2017, 2019), and has won four GMA Dove Awards, two K-LOVE Fan Awards, three gold singles, and numerous other nominations and recognition, all which quickly made him a household name and a staple at radio.
But he did visit a prison in Arkansas, where he and his wife told their stories of what God was doing in their lives. The response is something he never will forget. The men and women he visited in prison had made bad decisions – something he related to – and he said his heart broke for them. That was the day, he said, he learned the true meaning of grace.

The single, which was titled Chain Breaker proved to be an instant hit, peaking on the Hot Christian Songs Chart at number one and reaching Top 10 on Christian Radio.
